It is the second week of August. I noticed that there has been a shift in the light and that there is a change in the yard. Sometimes I can complain continuously of the rainy-ness that makes lawn mowing a necessity. I know that we are blessed to have rain. I know intellectually that rain is a blessing. It isn't a blessing to wait until 7pm or 7:30 pm to mow because of the heat. Taking a shower can't take the stickiness away. Rain also equates higher humidity.
Yet, the light has shifted. The cicadas and crickets are noisy. The web worms are making bigger and bigger messes. Leaves are beginning to break away and fly around through the air. The robins have migrated back. I have seen large groups of blackbirds migrating through.
All these minute changes that one takes for granted. It really sneaks up on us. We are so used to summer and we isolate ourselves in our air-conditioned spaces. Yet-when one sits quietly on a porch or outside, the changes are all around us.
I don't want to be one of those people who suddenly realize it is time to get the woolens out. I want to notice all the changes that move us towards the woolens. We only have about six weeks until Autumnal Equinox. I want to feel and hear and smell and see the changes.
So, I finally finished the second pair of Roxanne's socks. I told her I am taking a break from sock knitting. She has a fantasy going that I am going to be her personal sock knitter. I am going to figure out a way to get out of this gracefully.
I started knitting Persian Tiles, but I am not doing much knitting. I also picked up the Striped Blanket again. It is going fast. It is worsted weight yarn on bigger needles. I find that larger needles make my hands tired. So really not a lot of knitting.
I went to Fiber Christmas in July, and I was really good. I did buy two braids of roving of different colorways. I am combining them into a really pretty yarn. I finished my book on tape, and so I stopped yesterday at the end of that. It is satisfying to me to listen as I spin. I love my library loaning system over the internet.
I have also been watching some of the Olympics. I finally realized what it is about the televised mess that was off-putting the last Olympics. The commentators pick and choose what they show to their audience and they tell all these stories. I love when they build up all this crap about the athlete and then interview them after an event. The poor athlete is trying to catch a breath and normalize his body systems. The silly cow sticks a microphone into the athlete's face and asked a stupid question. Last night she asked Michael Phelps about pre-race jitters with his opponent doing something stupid right in front of him. Michael Phelps looked perplexed and looked at the monitor. "Oh, I wasn't even noticing that. I was just watching the race before mine on the monitor." He smiles and walks off. No drama there.
I finally had enough and turned on Netflix.
Noodles is beginning to show signs of change. I am trying a state of denial and making up excuses for his silly behavior. I am also beginning to get glimpses of truth edging in. He is much more needy than he has ever been. He is still killing, just not eating as much of the wild. I guess it is inevitable that his age is beginning to show.
I am going to stop now. I need to shower and get ready for an appointment in town today. I decided to combine several errands that can be done in that part of town. Ugh! I hate traffic in Fayetteville. It is just going to get worse as the college students trickle back for Fall semester. Another sign of age creeping in on me, I guess.
No new news on the brother front. B is still traveling with his job. He also spends a lot of free time on his boat with his dog. K hasn't shared anything more about L. She is so extremely secretive.
CJE and AE are going to Sante Fe for a week. Time for AE's birthday trip to the Opera.
CF is thrilled that I ordered her a new practice book on her flute.
And my LYS should be back from holiday.
Nothing else new on the home front.
It is time also for the Tontitown Grape Festival. Will have to stay away from that part of town.
Stay cool and get out to notice changes around you.

Independence Day Eve!
Some days messages arrive in the strangest ways. I watched an amazing movie last night, August, Osage County. It makes my dysfunctional family seem like nothing. Of course, my dysfunctional problem was holding it all inside so we were not confrontational. That's why I created anorexia as my control. I don't like to think about it too much.
Then a sweet young woman that is someone I have watched grow up and develop her own anorexia problem sent me a link on Facebook. It was about questions to ask yourself when you grow up with a non-loving mother.
I won't go into my deepest thoughts. The message is there; I will explore it today in private.
I did discuss some with one friend who said, "Both of our mothers are dead. Shouldn't all that stuff just go away, too?" Hmmmm.
So we had the most wonderful rain this morning. Lots and lots of water and cool air. It was so nice to stand at the back door and just smell the cleanness of the air. That's an awkward sentence. Should it be cleanliness? I don't know.
I finished the first pair of socks for RB in California. I am waiting for her to get them, try them on, and then she will decide to reorder another pair. Of course, I have already cast on a pair and I am almost finished with the cuff of the first one. I love the colorway in the yarn. I am tempted to keep them, but I already have so many pairs. It could be a hoarding problem.
Noodles did the funniest thing last night. I leave the back door open until I go to bed. He has a thing about going out on the deck in the dark. It is "his deck". I am watching the movie, knitting on the sock, and he steps around the corner and stares at me. "What?" He only said one "Meower!" and turned around and left. I kept knitting, and he returned, stared and another yelp. Only one sound. In my imagination I was hearing, "Mooooom!" the way teenagers say can stretch it out into three or four syllables. "Let me get to the end of the row." I kept knitting. He returned once more and was much more insistent with this yelp. "MOOOOOM!" So I threw down the knitting, and rushed into the kitchen.
All I could see was that Mr. Stinky, the wild kitty, had come in the back door and emptied his food bowl. I assured him that I would refill his bowl and that it wasn't a tragedy. He glanced out the door. That's when I noticed Mr. Stinky was on the deck. He slithered over the edge to escape. I stood at the doorway telling him to just leave Noodles' food alone. He needed to go away now. Then I assured Noodles that Mr. Stinky was gone and he was okay to go out to his deck.
Animals are so funny. I guess since I have lived with mine for almost 16 years that I know his communications and he knows mine.
I also finished my hat.
It is a traditional Fair Isle Fisherman's Kep. I am waiting until it dries before I put the tassel on. It is a project to support the museum in Shetland. I bought the basic pattern from them, and you are free to put whatever patterns you want on it. I used some of my handspun and some leftovers from my Spindrift stash. Bits and Bobs.
So right now I am only working on the blanket and this new pair of socks. It seems odd to not have a major project going on.
I finished my Targhee roving. I used two different colorways, and for some reason there is more brown in one skein. I am pleased with the results. I made it a bit thicker than I normally do. I only got 588 yards out of it all. Enough to do a small project. I have been thinking I want to make Harmonia's Rings. I bought the pattern about 8 years ago. Maybe. I'm thinking.
I just like the blues in this batch. The color is correct in the photo. A bit of dark, a bit of medium, and an almost turquoise light. Then the golden brown mixed in. If one searches enough there is a slight bit of green where the yellow and blue touch. I like it.
I guess I should get on with my day. I have been totally lazy with the rain and coolness coming in the windows. It is time to move and get going. YAWN!
Have a good 4th of July! Happy Independence Day!

A Whole Lot Nothing Going On!
I guess we sailed through May. Perhaps literally. I think that was the wettest May in a long, long time. Luckily I live on a dried up hillside of carst limestone. It all percolates down and filters into the aquifer.
Then June arrived, still coolish and wet. The second week of June, summer arrived with heat advisories and the meteorologists talking about dew points and humidity. Thank the man who invented air conditioning.
Of course, there is absolutely NOTHING on t.v., so a lot of time is spent reading and listening to audiobooks. Netflix is not all that interesting either. I love to spin while listening to an audiobook. I find that I continue the practice while I am knitting in the evenings.
My health is finally almost back to normal. I am getting more yard work accomplished, and the yard is fairly trimmed. I know it isn't to my neighbor's standards, but I am pleased at the work I have accomplished this season. The sad thing is the push mower I use for trim work is deceased. It didn't survive hitting the crosstie. I did buy a new battery for the weedeater, and it is working like a charm.
I am noticing that I don't seem to have a lot of honeybees. Most bumblebees. Hmmm. I also don't have a lot of hummigbirds. The downy woodpeckers drink more syrup than anyone.
The feral cat that was eating me out of house and home found the cat door last winter. I started locking the outside door on the porch to keep him from coming in the house, eating, and spraying. Of course, now that summer is here, Noodles wants to go out and be in the cool hunting time of the night. He yowls and protests and tries so hard to get me to let him OUT! Even though he is almost sixteen years old, he is an active hunter. He also still fights and he and Mr. Stinky got into a fight the other day. I try to explain to him that if he gets an infection from the nasty cat, he could get very sick. He just yowls.
I have slowed my knitting on the Fisherman Kep. I am knitting a pair of socks for someone and I want to get those done. I don't know why I have such a hard time with the second sock. It isn't Second Sock Syndrome. It is more like, "This is boring, I just want to get this done, why isn't it going faster, oops, that doesn't look right, " and then I slow down.
That leads me to all these internal dialogs one has with oneself. I find that I talk a lot to myself, I comment to myself all the time, and I find that I have to be really careful when I am in the grocery store. Sometimes I suddenly realize I am singing out loud to the music overhead and discussing my grocery list with myself. I only realize it when someone is staring at me. Oh, well.
I haven't been dyeing. I want to set up an indigo dyepot, but my get up and go hasn't gotten up yet.
I talked to CP from my LYS about sprinkle or speckle dyeing. Maybe I should do some for her. I think I will call her next week. Maybe that will get me going.
I have been doing a bit more sketching. I am following a class online, and that is fun. I also have been doing a bit more weaving.
Although it seems I have a lot of things going on, I don't seem to be getting anything done. I think it is part of the summer time heat doldrums. I don't know that I need an excuse, tho'.
My friend CJE has made a most beautiful jacket from her handwoven fabric. It is a challenge piece from an exchange within the guild. I think she did a really great job. I am rather envious that she can see the project completed and done. She can use it when she goes to Sante Fe.
My friend Beth Brown-Reinsel is teaching at the Taos Wool Festival this year. So we have plans of meeting up and visiting for a coupla days. I am really looking forward to that. It will be a fun trip.
So I guess that sorta catches me up. I feel like a slug because I am not getting a lot done. I am happy to be able to still manage my yard work. That is satisfying. I will finish the second sock this week. I will start decreasing on my Kep. So I do have goals that are manageable.
Stay cool. Stay happy. Stay healthy.

Every Day Is Earth Day!
My new pedestal sink in the hall bathroom. Perfect size!
The new flooring in the hall bathroom! Perfect!
The bedroom flooring. Perfect!
And now there is a match of the flooring in the bedroom and bathroom. No more carpet and linoleum! That was pretty gross! Now it is perfect!
My neighbors wanted to get new flooring. She had already replaced one room-the family room-and she wanted all of it to match! Of course, I don't understand the matching stuff, but I was the recipient of their old flooring. What a wonderful gift and a wonderful way to recycle the old.
We had some major hiccoughs along the way with the contractor company. What was going to be a two day job at their house and a two day job at my house turned into three weeks. I will not go into that ordeal. It will ruin the good feelings I have for my clean new flooring. I am so happy to have that nasty carpeting up.
So recycled flooring is in. I have a bit of work to complete everything. I need to caulk the baseboards and paint them. Eventually. Today I am tired and I am just going to look at the pretty new floor.
I am on the toe of the first sock for my friend OSM. Her house burned and I can't go to California to help. I can knit socks. So I am making the prettiest purple socks that can be found anywhere. The color is gradated subtle-y from deep purple to a dark burgundy purple to purple to lilac to pinky purple. Really nice dye job. The colors are in short stripes that make dashes around the foot instead of stripes. I love it.
I also started knitting a blanket in a striped chevron pattern. I like it too.
So maybe my knitting blahs are abating. I did get the pattern booklet from Shetland for The Fair Isle Fisherman's Kep Pattern. I am kinda getting excited to start that. I want to finish the socks first. Of course, I am thinking of colors and imagining the colors I want to use. When I get to actual color choosing, it will all be different anyway. I am thinking I want it made with handspun. I don't know, tho', I have a whole lot of Shetland Spindrift. Hmm..... See how this works. A lot of thinking and thinking to do.
I mowed the yard last evening. This is the period I call creative mowing. This year I have left patches of bachelor buttons, but they are few and far between. I don't know why that is. Some of them have spindly stalks and look sad. So I guess attrition has reached that population. The hollyhocks are not doing so well, either. I don't know why. The Solomon's seal is doing great! The irises haven't bloomed yet. The comfrey is doing exceptionally well where I moved it last year. It is quite happy. I noticed the catnip has a bunch of little black bugs on it, and it is also covered with lady bugs. I can't spray it with the lady bugs there and Noodles eats the leaves regularly. The tansy is now officially gone feral. The mugwort is not as thick as it has been in the past. The lamb's ears I got last year are exceptionally happy. The Echinacea and the coreopsis are slowly growing along. I haven't seen my milkweed this year. I don't seem to do well with that. I had an exceptionally pretty display from all the violets this year. I know that a list of all the plants would bore anyone to death.
It is such an odd Spring this year. I don't know yet how that has affected the plant population. I have something new in the weed world this year growing in the back yard. It grows thickly and quickly. When I mowed it last evening, my eyes burned and tears streamed down my face. My mucus membranes were telling me pepper plants of some kind. You know that feeling you get when you are processing hot peppers and want to get the seeds out? That's how my eyes were feeling.
I have gotten about two-thirds done on the second bobbin on the spinning wheel. I am spinning some pretty blue targhee. I will probably have enough to do something with when I complete it all. I think there is close to eleven or twelve ounces of wool to begin with. I divided it into 6 balls to make three skeins all total. I'll see how it turns out. While I was sitting patiently (not) during the flooring ordeal I was able to spin and listen to an audiobook.
I have a new phone. So great! Another computer to deal with. It is amazing what one can do with a phone! Mine is just an entry level phone, but it is more than I can deal with most of the time. I haven't figured out how to access voicemail. That's the only glitch-so far.
Well-off to knit a toe. I am taking it somewhat easy today. I had a restless night, and I awoke tired. Noodles is so insistent that I feed him and open the damn door-right now! It is almost time to think about some lunch. I am eating a lot lately.
Oh-I had the echocardiogram this past week. I will have to wait until I go to cardiologist to find out the results. Since he took me off statins, I have been feeling really energetic and almost normal. Yay!
I am still walking on the treadmill daily-except on the days I do a LOT of yardwork.
So lunchtime. Yum! A piece of chicken is waiting on me.

February Has Two Birthdays in My Family!
Before I rush off to discuss my family, I just want to give a shout out to a movie on Netflix- Evening. I had never heard of it, but since it has so many notable names (Vanessa Redgrave and Meryl Streep) I had to watch it. OMG! This was the best movie. I think I could watch it again if I had to. Why has no one mentioned this movie?
I am really excited about something I purchased last week. India Flint has spent the summer in Australia thinking of ways to reach people that want to know more about her work. She knows that folks just can't afford to jet around to places where she teaches. Most of her workshops in the US and Canada are sold out in hours. There is only so much one can absorb with books. Yes, dyeing is practice and practice and practice. So first off- she set up a private group on Facebook and newest info is posted there. It is a fast way to get information disseminated. Then she has created a new card game for dyers. It is four sets of ten cards. Three sets will have words or instructions printed on them. The fourth is for notes or whatever we want to put on them. When she received them from her printer, she then dyed on a whole lot of them. That is cool too. She said the person could use them like a tarot reading-pull one card from each pile. Then figure out how to use that info. Or one could just pull one card and do that activity. The fun will begin soon. She is preparing them for mailing out on February 29. She is wrapping the sets in a piece of cloth that she will have dyed. They are placed in a cardboard box for shipping. She wanted to do a small wooden box, but the postal service told her she would have to go through a lot of customs crap declaring what is in the box, etc. She also added an option of a dyed silk scarf for an additional fee. I chose not to get that.
I think I mentioned that I am trying to walk every day. My friend CJE gave me a FitBit primarily to monitor my heart rate. I find that it does not record every step I am taking on the treadmill. I tried to discuss this with the company without any success. Nonetheless, it has been entertaining to view my sleep habits and the steps I take. I am trying unsuccessfully to pay attention to the weight part. With my history of anorexia, I am really not supposed to even use a scale. Since I have been dealing with this for over 45 years, I think I can handle weighing once a week. The weight is not as important to me as the Lean vs Fat part. I really need to lose some fat. Don't we all?
I did a strange thing this week. I decided to go to Devil's Den State Park. I walked a trail that I always walk- and that I haven't had any difficulty with- because it is a loop trail. It is only 1.5 miles. Perfect for a day that was in the 50's. I really didn't think anything about the fact that it is a mountainous terrain-lots of up and down and roots and rocks and there were downed trees to climb over. I got about halfway when my gas ran out. It was a lot of sputtering and then boom! no more gas. I leaned up against a tree thinking about my options. Essentially it was a lot of pep talking to myself. "you got yourself in this, now get yourself out" "I got down here and I have to get up there" and looking up the bluff line. As I was climbing up the rock steps to the top of the bluff, I would say "one step at a time" "one step at a time" rest, rest, rest "one step at a time".
Once I was back at the car and leaning on the head rest, I had to plan how quickly I could find something to eat. I was thinking I needed fuel. I stopped at McDonald's and got an egg mcmuffin. They are 300 calories with some protein in it.
After I am home for perhaps 30 minutes, I think that my blood pressure must be sky rocketing. My ears are ringing. No-my blood pressure was actually Hypotensive. So this was perhaps one hour after my episode. I wonder what my blood pressure had been when I was leaning on the tree wondering how I was going to get back to the car?
The other thing is my FitBit gave me a badge because I had climbed 25 flights of stairs.
Well, my body is beginning to fall apart. I just have a hard time changing with this.
Now to family matters. My brother's birthday is next week. My little grand-nephew's birthday is in 18 days. Hmmm.
I had a dream about my brother's dog. We had a great conversation about her sailboat with two sails and how much fun she has sailing. So I started painting a picture of this for my brother. I spent the best part of two days working and I hated it. It was AWFUL! So this morning I put aside the stupid board I was painting on. I pulled out a sheet of my watercolor paper. I did a fast sketch and I loved it. It was whimsical and obviously just a sketch. Not a painting-just a quick sketch. I also wrote a short story of our conversation about sailing. So those are now packaged with a note explaining it. On the outside of the note I wrote From Sukie and Judy.
.I like it. It is silly and funny all at the same time.
MH will be getting a hat from me. He is at the age that he will probably pull it off. I just thought he needed a new hat when they go to Colorado. I have to find him a new book too. That's what Aunties provide. Knitwear and books. Ha!
I am still spinning the mystery brown stuff. I am still knitting my girlfriend's socks. I haven't touched that last sleeve on my sweater that is taking too long.
I also have not woven. I made a promise to weave every day. Hasn't happened. I had another one of my memory jumps this week. I remember when I was wanting to weave Josef Albers color studies to demonstrate how color works differently with fiber vs. painting. That was nixed by my art advisor. I don't know if that shipped has sailed. I don't know if it is something that still needs to be done. I just don't know. Too much happened this week after that epiphany. I will have to think on it.
I watched a wonderful video with Susun Weed about Artemis Vulgaris-Croneswort. Most folk call it Mugwort. Susun's plants told her it does not like to be called Mugwort. It makes one think of drinking from a mug. I think I will have to go to YouTube and watch more of her videos. She is a wonderful storyteller. She also said that was how people knew where the herbalist lived. There would be Croneswort growing right by the door. When folk moved to the city, they would hang the dried plant by the door or paint a picture of it on their door. I have it growing by my back step. I have had these plants for at least 20+ years.
Herbs are such wonderful plants. They have been around for a lot longer than pharmaceuticals have. It's too bad that alternative medicine is not given more credit.
Well, I have chattered a long, long time today. Enjoy the sunshine. It is a beautiful weekend.
September-A Transition Month
Tomorrow is the first day of autumn-the Autumnal Equinox. It is a time for transition. I notice it is very subtle how it happens. Suddenly we are having bits of cooler weather that move back to summer within days. On the cooler days we have little humidity. On the warmer days we have high humidity. The light is changing. That I am not ready for-ever. I like to have light to work by. I find overcast, cloudy days or late mornings early nights light depressing. I guess I am Persephone at heart.
I have been preparing for winter to come. I am still working on the sweater and the Sanquahar scarf. I finished a pair of socks for my niece, so I cast on a linen stitch scarf. I am really not in a knitting mode, but I know what I have is fairly easy to do and mindless knitting. I am not sure I will ever do a complicated all-over pattern in the wintertime again. The light was dim and I had trouble reading the chart. I had to sit by a window and I had to only work a few hours on it at a time. How did women do it by candlelight or lantern light?
I have been cleaning outside preparing for the Fall weather. I had my deck repaired-a big cost for me. I painted the front rails on the porch, and I painted the new railing on the side porch and the replacement window sill. I like it I don't have to mow as often. The grass is changing. I moved the garden bird feeder to a more open spot that I can still see out my windows. I cleaned it out and it is waiting patiently for a fill up.
I am still getting hummers, so the sugar water continues. I heard geese in late August, and I am pretty sure they weren't our usual guests down on Barrington Road. We do have a large group of geese that come in and stay there over the winter. They rear young and then migrate again. We had a large group of blackbirds that migrated through. The robins have come and gone. Birdsong is different now. It isn't the usual mating songs that I hear in early summer and the melody is different now.
Noodles is still fighting fleas. I am giving him Capstar every two weeks. I have never had to do that. Usually I can give him one and that is the end of it. Of course, I use the topical flea and tick stuff once monthly. That usually takes care of anything. At the knitting circle everyone said they were having a terrible time. One woman said her vet mentioned this was the worse flea season she had ever seen.
I am still working on Following the Lines on the tapestry loom. I am close to finished. I have dragged my heels finishing it. I am planning to take a course with Rebecca Mezoff online and the sign up is October 5. I want to just advance my warp and keep on weaving without cutting off this one. I have the tension set and it is perfect and I don't want to mess with changing that.
A bit of a break while I talked to CJE. The neighborhood crows are talking outside. The bluejays have been fussing. It is a lovely day-the eve of Fall.
Have a good week. Enjoy the transition. Prepare as you must. The seasons will change regardless of preparation.

Is It Fall Yet?
I have been mosey-ing along through summer. It got really hot for a while. Our normal heat plus humidity. It is the kind of weather that makes one sit in air conditioning and try not to think about our ancestors sweltering in layers of clothes and unable to breathe properly.
Then in August we had a cool snap. Normally in August it is HOT and 100% humidity. I was able to turn off the a/c for a while. The nights actually got down into the 50's on some nights. This is unheard of where we live. No one, and I mean no one, has ever imagined an August like the one we have had the last two weeks.
Today the heat is back on; the a/c is turned on.
I have had a lot of stuff happen at one time. Since I retired, I don't do catastrophe well. I get a bit melodramatic-the woe is me routine. No one cared. It's nice to have friends that just shrug and move on.
My riding lawn mower died right at the end of a row I was mowing. I made myself finish the mowing with the push mower. That nearly killed me. I find that my heart rate fluctuates wildly when I am hot, tired, exasperated, and mad. Sears will send someone out to take care of your mower for a very hefty sum. It also takes about two weeks or so to get in queue.
Then I stepped out on the deck in back and thought that something wasn't right. I went under a little ways and could see the support board was katty-wancuss. I don't know how to spell that. Phonetics are good for some things; others not so good. When I returned on top, it was with a LOT of dismay that I saw that the deck was actually pulling away from the wall of the house.
Then when I really looked, I saw the reason it was pulling away from the house. The boards it was attached to were rotted and ant filled. I don't mean a few little ants. I mean ant filled. I called my handyman service, and they sent someone out within a few days to inspect and give me an estimate. I also called the termite inspector to come out and inspect for termites.
So after a long drawn out ordeal, two men jacked up the deck, replaced the support wall, reattached the deck properly, replaced some siding , and left me with a secure and badly scarred up deck. This Fall I have to seal it for winter time.
The mower gets fixed in another week or so. So I had to hire someone to mow and trim.
Money is precious to me. I hate to splurge on things like house repairs. Sigh! More drama.
My SIL lost her husband a week ago. It was very sudden and unexpected. I have called her a few times to check up on her. I guess I will have to visit in Fall.
I have finished the pretty green yarn that I was spinning. It was dyed with tansy. I am now knitting my indigo yarn. It actually started as an experiment with prickly pear and that went wrong immediately. So I rinsed that off and tucked it in the indigo bucket. It will be pretty when finished. On the electric spinner I am still spinning the green dyed with redbud leaves.
I finally got the yoke increased on the raglan sweater and the sleeves taken off to waste yarn. It is just a basic sweater and nothing fancy. I am knitting a pair of socks that have been promised to my niece. I am using the Monkey pattern for those. The stranded work got put on time out for a while. I have cast on 450 stitches to make a linen stitch scarf.
I have a pretty tapestry going on the loom. I feel overwhelmed at times, so I have dragged my feet on that. I dreamed one night that I was told to "Follow the line." I had an art instructor that used to tell us that all the time. If we sat too long staring he would nudge us with "Just follow the line".
So nothing else too new. My niece and her man have finally set a date for the wedding. I look forward to going to Florida in April. I will be really sick to death of winter by then.
Keeping busy, but nothing earth shaking to report. I had the goats out to clear some of the brush on the west side. I hear geese overhead periodically, although it is far too early for that. The robins have moved back to bulk up for their journey to wherever they go. The hummingbirds are feeding well. A noisy wren is setting up camp in the back.
The chives and the mint are all that are blooming. Usual end of summer routine.
Sorry to not write more often. Just nothing happening around here. Next time.

Valentine's Day
It seems to me that the holidays-like Valentines Day- are super hyped these days. I bet the stores already have green shamrocks and little people pasted on the walls. It boggles the mind.
This week I had a bit of a scare. My blood pressure read 196/97. It never came down below 165, and I was really worried. I went to the clinic, and I am now on bp meds and the doc put me back on cholesterol meds. I am monitoring my bp daily and will return to the doctor next Wednesday.
So maybe I have an active imagination, but I feel more energized and want to get a lot done in a day.
I have sheets out on the line, dog beds in the washer, and bread is rising. I have swept the floors-I am not going to mop today- and I am really ready to just sit down a while and rest.
I finished my sweater. I slogged through the stockinette row after row after row. It is really pretty. I found the cutest yellow buttons that are vintage, and I need to sew those on today. I finished the little blue hat for Max's birthday. I don't see how this thing will fit him. He is one big boy.
I just put the dog beds in the dryer to get rid of some of the hair. Then I will put it outside to finish drying. Noodles is lying on the top of the dryer in a sunny spot. I had a memory of standing next to the shaking washing machine and dryer as a kid. We thought it could jiggle away our fat. Too funny, eh?
The bread is beginning to smell yeasty. I love the smell of rising bread.
I have had a lot of trouble going to sleep lately. Just as I settle and find a comfy spot, my brain engages. I think about the stories I am writing right now. I think of where they are going and how I am going to bring them to that spot. How does one just turn off one's brain? Just as I relax, I have to get up and go to the bathroom. Sigh!
Today is an absolutely gorgeous day! The sun is shining, the sky is blue, a bit of wind. According to the weather guy, this evening the wind will shift from the north. This will herald in our newest cold front from the artic. UGH! I hate cold. It could be just like today forever. Tomorrow the temp is supposed to plummet. Then snow/freezing rain/and or ice will move in. UGH! That is why I am preparing everything today for the event.
I don't know what I will knit next. I finally put a pair of socks on the needles. I also started a zigzag afghan. It is one of those ten stitch patterns. Both are quite simple to do, and I am up for something for a challenge. I just don't know what.
I am almost finished spinning the second bobbin of orange mutli merino, and then I will ply that. I think it is quite pretty. Unspun the orange is rather dominant. Blended in while spinning, it is not as prominent. Yes, it is orange, but more of an earthy, Fall leaves kind of orange. I like it a lot.
Patty is snoring right next to me. Poor little thing. She is so confused why I am so active. She has to be right under my feet at all times, and it does discombobulate her teeny brain. She is happy most of the time and doesn't seem to be in any kind of distress most of the time. I can be thankful for that.
So back to work. It has been a good sit down and a bit of a rest. I have some things I want to do before lunch. Whew! I don't know where the energy came from, but I am taking advantage of it.
Keep safe, keep warm, and stay off the roads on Monday morning. Next time.

Patterns of Life
Sometimes I am sad. Sometimes I am okay. Sometimes I am happy. I don't know what regulates all that. I know that Patty and Noodles are happy most of the time that I am home and on our regular schedules. Schedules are important to them.
Today when I woke Patty was smacking her mouth getting her mouth wet after drooling all night. Noodles was yelling. I was dreaming a sad dream about my friend that died in January. So up we go, out the door into the rain, potty time completed for the two of them, and then BREAKFAST! Food is very important to them.
It is so strange since Noodles can come and go as he wishes with the cat door. Every night and every day he goes for the first walk with us and the last walk at night. The rest of the time is his own imaginary free time, until 3 pm. That's dinner time for the two of them. Of course, they have to beg for shares of my dinner, but please do not go over the 3 pm time for them.
I also now have wild birds in the mix of schedules. I cleaned the sugar water for the hummingbirds as scheduled. I threw out more ground seeds and filled the big feeder. I have one woodpecker that will "talk" to me if there isn't enough seed.
So I made a promise over the weekend that I will get the sleeve going on my stranded sweater. It has languished long enough. I made a commitment to myself to finish this before the heat is on. Yesterday was a struggle. I picked up and knitted 131 stitches around the sleeve hole. I counted at least six times, and I got six different numbers. I finally put a stick in between stitches once 50 was counted twice. That worked. I was able to do the first row fine, but the second row had to be completely unknitted. Sigh! I finally got the second row finished. But somehow now the third row is not working. Double Sigh!
So today after everyone was fed and watered and I finished my emails, I said out loud to myself," Today we are going to get this set up finished and the sleeve moving along." Here I sit typing instead of sitting in my knitting chair and knitting.
I notice that I have a lot of bumblebees. I haven't seen as many honeybees as usual. Some of my etnobotany friends say that is good. The honeybees are invaders of the bumblebee territory anyway.
Oh, well.
I am turning the heel on the second sock that is commissioned. I am so over socks right now. I did decide that my easy-peasy summer project is going to be a barn raising afghan. It is knitted in squares. I am using Noro Taiyo sock yarn. I like the two colorways I chose. It is begun in the center, and for some reason it took three tries to get the stupid circle to close. I am real close to done on the first one.
I finally remembered that seeds have to be in the ground by Good Friday! I remembered on Good Friday. I know that is not a real rule, but it was my grandmother's rule. So I seeded some perennials and some sunflowers. I never get a good crop, but the few sunflowers I get are loved by the finches, chickadees, and nuthatches. I did plant some dye flowers, but I think my seed was old. We will see.
Today is a nice soft rain day. It was going good for a while, but has stopped momentarily. I think we still need rain. It hasn't been a bad April, but this is usually a rain month for us. Weather is so unpredictable any more. No patterns to follow.
So keep on knitting through the frustrations and keep on trying. My new motto. See ya next time.

The Last Hurrah for Weather! I Hope!
It has been an incredible week of weather here in the mid-south. Everyone knows that there was a HUGE tornado in Moore OK last Monday. On Sunday there were 30 tornadoes from Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Iowa-straight up tornado alley. Then the big one hit on Monday in Oklahoma. That same group of storms sent 4 small tornadoes to our little corner of the world. The closest to me was north of Siloam Springs, approximately 15-20 miles away.
Then Tuesday we had chilly weather and rain all day long. We got approximately 6 inches of rain. Then Wednesday it was hot and sunny and nice. Thursday it was cloudy and coolish-around 60 degrees. It was supposed to rain again, but never did. I just got out and mowed the yard just in case it did and things grew more. Then yesterday sunny and hot.
I got a surprise wellness-check from a young woman that I met at the Washington County Fair last Fall. She was concerned that I was ill and unable to mow my yard. I know that the untidiness of my flower beds is alarming, but really, I am able to mow most of my yard. The bachelor buttons have taken over and have dominated the whole mess. But as they fade away, the correopsis is blooming now, the verbena is starting to bloom, and the hollyhocks are putting on stalks of buds. So eventually there will be other color.
I did note that the bumblebees have been very, very happy during the last coupla weeks. I read online that bees like the color blue. Now how in the world can they tell the color blue? I don't know about that. But they are very happy out there in bachelor button land.
Today I ventured into the midst to check out some other things, and I did see 3-4 honey bees. That makes me very, very happy that they are there. I was so worried with that disease that killed off so many would decimate my little population.
I did see a really pretty ribbon snake the other day in the midst of plants. That also makes me happy.
Other than yard and weather, I have been busy finishing up my last skein of the pretty red wool/alpaca yarn. I sit with Netflix and spin away. I haven't wound the skein yet, but I am sure there is a lot of yardage in this one.
I finished the little Selbu hat, and it is really pretty. I like the subtle light gray and white combo.
I finished one of the Manly Socks, and have cast on for number two.
I started a scarf in a simple lace pattern by Anne Hanson, but I am not in love with this one. Something isn't right, but I am going to finish it. I frogged the first pattern I attempted. I don't think the yarn will hold up to another frogging.
I am decreasing on the shawl that I started early in the Spring. I don't work on it much since I don't need it right now.
I replanted two houseplants yesterday, and they will have to get over the shock of new housing.
I have plans for an indigo vat, if and when the weather settles down. I have to plan out what I am going to dye, and get all that ready. I have plenty of tansy right now to do a dye bath, but I don't think I will right now. Maybe I will do a solar dye bottle. That might do me.
My neighbors' grandson is getting married today. He is such a nice young man. I hope they have a long and wonderful life together.
Nothing else of note. It is just the time of year that is hardest. The transition from late Spring into Summer. Then the grumping begins of the heat and humidity, instead of the wet and cold. Oh, well, such is life in Arkansas.
No plans for the summer have arisen. I want to take a little trip, but nothing has come up for me. I haven't really put any thoughts into it, but there is a little desire. My biggest problem is I get all excited and want to do a trip, but the actually going is not a great desire. It is the planning or anticipation that is fun. Not the trip, for sure.
Well, have a safe and glorious Memorial Weekend. Enjoy the lazy days.

It Must Be Time!
Time for the Snow Tire and Daffodil Festival! It has been really warm and windy, and now the new front is supposed to bring a mixture of rain, sleet, freezing rain, ice, and who knows what. I worry about ice on power lines more than anything else. I do need to recharge two of my batteries before then. Isn't this crazy.
Blogger is again not letting me upload photos. I wish they would get their s__ together.
I finished one pair of the commissioned socks, and I am on the heel of the second sock on the second pair. I want these to be DONE! I am so over the sock business. I am dreadfully behind in my inventory for the fiber show in April. Oh, well.
I am also spinning along on the merino I got from HandHeld. It is gorgeous stuff. I am almost finished with the second skein's singles. Then plying, then DONE!
I have had a minor little bug, and my head is full of fluid. I mope around from room to room, but I am not sick enough to go to bed. If I am in the front room, I knit. If I am in this room, I spin. I did lie down a little while yesterday and read my good book.
It is really dark outside. I hate the waiting part of a storm of any kind. There is a frenzy at the bird feeder that is a telling sign that weather is moving in.
Not a whole lot going on. It is that time of year where the anticipation is more exciting than the actual weather. It isn't Spring yet, but soon. We have had a bit of rain, which bodes well for us. We are still in drought, but hopefully we will have a wet Spring to help out. I am debating about planting Spring greens-lettuce and spinach. I have seed potatoes, but not yet on that.
Noodles has really been hunting lately, but so far he hasn't brought any kill into the house. Today he is curled up in bed. I bet his leg aches. Mine does.
Stay safe. I am going to plug in some batteries and line things up just in case.

Change is on the way!
These sockies are done! In more ways than some. These began life as a sock blank that I found when I cleaned up my studio way back when. I got weird one day and just threw some dyes together and I had kinda an idea of what I wanted. Well, obviously, when it was finished, it was not my idea at all but something else! So I knitted them up and they are done. I will not wear them a lot because they are merino, soft as all get out, and they will wear out quick in the heel and heel flap.
But right now I am making baby sockies out of the leftovers, and that is perfect for baby. They are really, really soft, and snuggly and squishy.
CJE and I taught some friends how to spin on a spindolyn yesterday. That was fun, but it was really exhausting. Mainly because I had to clean up the house some beforehand. One of the friends is a weaver and knitter, and her niece is a knitter. So each will do different things with their new skill.
I guess I am still in a nesting mode today. I put away all the things I had out yesterday for the class. I straightened up the house some. I did a load of clothes, and I gave Patty a bath. And since Patty had a bath, I washed the blankets on the bed. She has one she likes to pull up around herself, and it was kinda smelly.
As we speak, it is getting darker and darker outside. Change is on the way. We have had lovely Spring weather for quite some time. I have flowers blooming-even my holly bushes! I have been busy trying to get the flower bed ready for seeding before winter comes. I have to wait until frost, or the seeds will sprout.
I just looked out the window, and the groundhog is out being very adventurous. He/she eats a few nibbles, stands up and looks around, and then back down to nibble some more. They are not as destructive as the armadillos, but they do like to eat flowers in the Spring. They have broken my hollyhock stems to eat the flowers, and that is not nice at all. Right now he/she is eating plantain leaves. The other day I saw he/she eating dandelion leaves and flowers.
My neighbor brought over a HUGE plate of fried catfish, hushpuppies and some fried potatoes. It was so very, very good. His brother caught a 21 pound catfish, and shared some of the fillets. It was a very thoughtful gift after a long, tiring day.
I think this cold front coming in is not welcome. I have enjoyed having the Spring weather, and being able to work outside so much. I have actually thought what kind of plants I want to plant, and how much work I have had this time to clean up my big flower bed. I can really only do the physically hard stuff for about 30-40 mins now. I have to admit I am older than my mind thinks.
And now with the cooler weather comes nesting and getting ready for being indoors. I have to go put the blankets outside for the short time before the rain comes. I want that smell when I go to bed tonight.
Snuggle up with the ones you love!

A Little Rain, A Little Chilly!
I am sitting in front of the window facing north. When I took Patty out this a.m., I noticed some kind of dark cloud front thing to the north. And here it is-raging over us with a cloudburst and a mighty darkness. I like Fall rain. It settles the earth to lull her to sleep again during the winter months. I don't really like Spring storms in the Fall. Which is what we are having tomorrow. There is lots of thunder now, rumbling along the edge of the front. Trees are bending in the wind. Yep-it's definitely Fall weather now.
The trees are beginning to change colors, and the Arkansas Parks and Tourism folks are putting out the leaf reports. It will be that way until the first week of November. I like to drive out and see the mountains in the Fall. There is such a great color splurge and then there are more grays, deep greens from the evergreens, and it appears to be an impressionistic painting.
My friend OSM came last Monday for her test on her basal cell thing on her nose. She has to return on Monday next for the stitches to be removed. She is hanging in there. I don't know how she is managing all her illnesses at this time.
I have had a teeny virus thingy in my tummy, and it is the beginning of indoor season now for sure. I didn't feel "sick", but I had a bad, bad headache Tuesday and Wednesday. I thought it was just allergies. I also had a stomach ache, but I thought that was my digestive thing and took extra digestive enzymes. Yesterday I had to go to the bathroom a lot, and I just felt "off". I had chills all day too.
I did wake up at 3am yesterday and just "knew" how to fix the sewing problem I had on the quilt top.
I managed to get two rows sewn up, but I ripped out almost as much as I sewed. I also left the iron flat on the ironing board, and now I have a scorched mark on the cover. I decided I had to quit before I messed up more. I noticed this morning I made a big mistake, and I will have to correct that before I can go on. At least the solution I found is working. It's just my "focus" button is not working right.
I am knitting the heel flap on sock 2. And I am on the stockinette rounds for the sweater. Both are boring knitting, but do-able in my mind state.
Oooh-a big clap of thunder. I better get this published before the lights go out. I love Fall storms!

The Bizarre Weather Continues!
I think it is totally boring to always talk about the weather. But the weather is bizarre. We have been in drought since May-three months. Suddenly we are getting a Fall-like pattern of thunder storms without a lot of rain. It certainly isn't a drought-buster with a total of less than an inch. But a lot of thunder and lightening.
And the temperatures are cooler. I mean-whodathunkit-high 50's at night?!? Perfect camping weather!
I have also begun feeding the songbirds. I never have done this so early before. There is very little food for them in the weeds. The finches have returned, and I have the usual chickadees, titmouses, cardinals, blue jays, wrens, etc.
I saw a show on t.v. about the hummingbirds the other night. There is concern that the drought will effect their migration pattern. So people are putting out more food for them all over the place. I haven't had a lot of activity, but the birds do eat a lot of sugar water.
I also saw a blurb on t.v. that said butterflies will have a similar problem with their migration.
I am so very close to the end of the shawl/wrap/scarf with feather and fan pattern. I am ready to be done and move on to the next project.
SIL socks are getting there too. I have turned the heel and I am in the gusset on sock two. Once I finish the gusset, the rest is easy-peasy.
CJE loaned a DVD set on Loom Maintenance, and I watched disc 1 last night. Nothing new. I am thinking I really had good teachers when I learned to weave a long, long time ago. There is so much more to weaving than just sitting down at a loom and weaving. I hope that the students I taught a long, long time ago think I taught them so much more than how to get a good product off the loom.
With the cooler weather, I want to get out in the yard more. I did pull some weeds this morning early. I have been cooped up with the a/c for so long this season. I am ready to get out. I want to take Patty on a long walk in the woods somewhere.
Noodles has adopted Patty's bed, and sleeps in it all the time. So I guess I will look for another one at the Dollar store next trip. Patty gets really upset when she sees him in her bed. Poor little mistreated puppy.
I am thinking about next projects in my head while I finish up the current ones. I want to do a Fair Isle hat with the leftover yarn from the sweater vest project. I also think I will make some fingerless gloves.
CF just finished her first pair of gloves, and is excited about that. Gloves are like socks-once you do one pair, you know they are not hard and can continue doing them. It is getting over the fear part that is hard.
I guess that's it. Nothing too new. Just bizarre weather patterns. The usual household drama going on.

The Tale of Twin Sockies!
The first sockie that was born is on the left in both pictures. It is a plain-ole sock pattern with the goat's eye pattern by Nancy Bush. I worked really hard on this sock. When it was finished, I hastily tried to put it on. Like Cinderella's slipper, the damn thing would not go over my heel. I got really, really mad, and I threw it in the knitting bowl and cursed.
After a long, long time (maybe a month), I picked it up and examined it. I was still mad, but I wasn't as angry as before. I would lay in bed at night and think about this sock. I finally got the brilliant idea to soak this sock for a very long time, and stretch it as much as I could. I got up at midnight and started doing just that. I finally was able to get it over the sock blocker. When it was dried, I could get it on my foot. It was very snug.
In the meantime, I took the yarn that I used for the background and warped my loom for a scarf. I had dyed this yarn, so there is no match for it in the universe.
Then some time later, I picked up the nasty little sock and stared at it and thought about it. I hate to admit failure in any knitting project. If I don't like something, I will frog it all the way or at least until I like the way it looks. This was a completed sock, and I hated it. Then I started thinking again about how to make this right.
I thought-Maybe I could make a puppet. Maybe I could make a coin purse. Everyone called it a giraffe sock. Maybe I could make a giraffe toy.
Of course, I will knit another sock, and it will fit. Somehow I was going to make this one work. I decided to knit it toe-up with an afterthought heel. I did make a little glitch in the pattern work, but I was going to make this one work. The other problem is what to do about the background color. I used another skein of yarn from the same dye bath as the first, but it was much darker. Was I going to be picky, picky, or was I going to finish this pair of socks?
So last night I finished the other sock. I soaked them both again and put them on the sock blockers. The second one did fit over the blocker much easier than the first sock.
So now I have finished the awful pair of fraternal twins. Right now I am just happy I finished this pair of awful socks. I know there is a lesson here, but right now I just want to enjoy the view of finished socks. And I have not tried them on. No, I am not going to spoil my mood right now.
The End.

The End.

Stick A Fork In It-Part 2
I finished the plain socks-got a pic before washing and will get another one after wash. Like them-they fit well-whew! That's it for my socks this year. Unless I get high behind and finish the giraffe socks!
And we will see about that. I think that it is 8 pairs this year. Maybe 9, but I think 8.

Sigh! Self-Discipline Wins Again!
These socks started out as just another sock project that I kept in my purse for a take-along knitting. Once I finished the leg of the first one, I knew they had to go to H, mainly because of the color. Once I finished the first sock, I was in LOVE with Malabrigo sock yarn. It is the softest and easiest to knit I think of any I have knitted with.
Somewhere along the way, it got cooler outside. I know, I know, it is warmer in Little Rock than up here. So I mentally made a note that I needed to start focusing on knitting the socks daily instead of only when I went somewhere. Then a week ago Friday night I was lying in bed thinking about my knitting. I do this a lot at night when I review what I have done for the day and what needs to be done.
So I mentally said, "Okay. We need to get the second sock finished by next week. I need to knit every day and get this done." So I turned the heel by Sunday night, and cruised along on the foot during the week. I pushed myself to get it done. I realized that by Tuesday I needed to knit a minimum of 2-3 inches a day. It was doable if I pushed and did not try to do too many other things.
Other than that, I have been working on my sweater body, the afghan, the placemats, and the weaving on the loom. I am still spinning the Oxford wool.
I also have had three cable guys here trying to figure out what to do with my cable service. So it is difficult when you have clunky guys wandering around.
We have had major raining for two days now. It is unbelievable, huh?!? First we were in late summer and drought, then wham! Fall arrived with cooler weather, and now Spring has come with thunderstorms and tornado warnings! The sky was the ugliest yellowish color right at dark, and that always makes me nervous. Lots of thunder booming and lightening and buckets of water. You know-Spring weather!
Patty and I spent yesterday with CJE and JE. We went to the opening of a new yarn shop, we went to eat Mexican food, then to JE's shop so I could get some CotLin to weave, and then finally to the nursing home where CJE's mom is having rehab. A full day to say the least. When we got home about 8:30 p.m., I fed Noodles and Patty, and Patty went to bed. She was exhausted. I had to wake her up at 10 pm to go to the bathroom before I went to bed.
So this self-discipline thing is how I finish projects that need a nudge to get it done. And this morning on NPR there was a discussion with somebody who has written a book on self-discipline. He did mention that dieting is the hardest, since we need to keep our glucose levels up to concentrate and get work done. That's when people have a tendency to cheat with a little something because their energy levels are so low.
Occasionally I get wild and set goals and push myself to get things done. It works for me. It is only a challenge for me this time, since obviously no one else is pushing me to finish these socks.
I usually set goals when I have a deadline, and I try hard to reach and obtain those goals. I don't always make it, but I can get close most times.
So no final pushes this week. I did catch myself knitting on the giraffe socks tonight and counting spots. I put it down and said, "It will get done. Don't worry about it."
Enjoy the week. The storm has passed for now. I am unsure how many more we will get tonight. Well, there is more rumbling. Weird! Spring in September.

Journeys Create Change!
We are all on a journey, and sometimes our paths do pass one another. We meander along, or muddle along, and change happens without our knowing. We are now in another change of season, and it is happening rather quickly. We have 90 degrees one day, and the next day it is 65 degrees. We haven't had rain for so long, and today it is cloudy, windy, cool, and there is spitting rain. Not a ground soaking rain that is needed, just spit. The light is definitely changing.
I have been observing the moon rise on full moons for some time now. Monday night it was almost dead center east. Don't you wonder what the ancients knew about moonrises? They observed them night after night after night for a whole lifetime. And it was knowledge that led to the survival of life for many. I have mentioned constellations before in blogs, but I also observe the Big Dipper's position during different seasons and also Orion.
AE and CJE are back from their journey to South America. They actually spotted a jaguar, and CJE mentioned whole herds of vicunas in the highest elevations. Of course, they are a protected species, but she still wanted to collect something from the dead bodies she spotted. I don't know if vicuna fleece is worth scavenging a dead body or not.
My friend GO is on a journey today to the Rockies in Colorado. He goes every September to hasten his return to cold weather. It is also a reminder that he is no longer that youngster that was able to hike miles up into the mountains without much provision. Now that he has approached 60 like the rest of us, he decided he wanted to try some backpacking again. Yeah! Right! I did loan him my backpacking tent, just in case he wants to. We will see what happens after he returns to tell his story.
I am not going to Taos this year, but I sure have the itch. Especially now that the weather has changed. Whew! It is really hard not to, but I don't need to go. Just want to.
I found a wonderful link yesterday to a piece of art that is very exciting. www.bluecatheaven.com.au I bought a downloadable The Illuminated Book of Cats. It is very, very interesting and beautiful. She also makes cards to sell.
I listened to Brenda Dayne's podcast Sunday and she had a wonderful audio journey to Dylan Thomas' beach house. A friend of hers read the poem, "In My Craft or Sullen Art" while sitting in the cottage. It was so beautiful. I found a copy of the poem, and now I have a copy right here by the computer. Isn't it funny how we forget about poems or poets or writers that are no longer in the media? This was a nice reminder to go back and revisit some of my favorite writers.
I am almost finished with one set of placemats. I sewed three sets of three charms to see how they look. I think I am really, really going to like this next project. The placemats did not turn out what I envisioned, so instead of a Christmas gift, it may be something for me to use. We will see. I am again starting the give-away box. It will tickle several of my friends to death to get to go through that when they visit.
I have tried to do some yard work, but it makes me sneeze and sneeze. The dust and mold is awful. I did get some trimming done in one spot, and I had to go inside to take an antihistamine.
My neighbor had a broken pipe that I found on Saturday. It is on the side of his RV barn that is closest to my yard. I noticed a big puddle and soaked ground by the fence, and he later found the leak. He called his grandson to help dig the hole and he has been trying to get that repaired as quickly as possible. He mentioned his water bill was over $100 last month, and he did not investigate it!
The new tv season starts soon. Thank goodness! I am not really thrilled with some of the trailers I have seen, but some do look interesting. It appears that strong women are again the focus of this season. I guess they are targeting the young women that are professionals out there in the real world. No one cares what an old lady thinks, huh?
I have been pushing to finish H's socks. I am almost to the toe decrease on sock 2. Yeah! I am ready for these to be finished. Once I turn the heel, I am so looking forward to getting them finished. Isn't that weird? I think I am going to do a lacy pair after these. Something that keeps my interest, but not difficult to follow. I have a pattern that can be easily memorized.
I am still plugging along with the afghan-just changed colors again. I am now doing the body of the sweater. It was a challenge to figure out how to display the charts and keep my place, but I have a system now. I got a three-ring binder, some plastic sleeves, two magnet boards, and voila! a system. I have the pattern itself in another sleeve so I can flip over to see it when needed. It is working pretty well. I just can't have a big fat cat sitting in my lap when I am knitting that, since the notebook takes up the lap part.
I did a little bit of spinning Sunday while listening to podcasts. But for the most part, I am sewing or knitting. I give myself permission to take breaks.
So that is all the big news. Nothing much else to report. Keep busy, keep safe, and keep knitting.

A Very, Very Short Reprieve!
Yesterday I woke up to actually cooler temps! It was 85 degrees and little humidity. The nicest part was clouds! It actually appeared to want to rain. I mowed the little bitty strip of Bermuda grass that grows above the gray water release. No rain, but blessed clouds!
I went to three different stores on errands, and it appeared to me that there were quite a few people out doing the same. The sun finally came out in the afternoon, but just a nice little reprieve from the relentless heat.
This morning I awoke to 85 degrees, and it was so hot when I took Patty out. The sun was blaring out heat and the wind was just hot air blowing. It was a major contrast of weather.
I am so close to finishing the sleeves on the handspun sweater. I am knitting the heel flap on my daughter-in-law's sock.
Speaking of socks, I have to repeat what my brother and I discussed yesterday. He called me after he had visited his son for his son's b.d. He again told me about H and R's trip that he had organized for them to Seattle. He tells me this every phone call. ?Senior Moments? Anyway, I mentioned that I would certainly love the yarn shops, but not the ballgame that they are going to.
And, as usual, he glossed over that and blathered on about more stuff. Finally I said, "Did you know that in that part of the world there were over 6000 sock knitters gathering for a Sock Summit, and that over 600 of them did a flash mob?" He didn't get it. I had to repeat sock knitter three times. He finally said, "Do people really still knit socks?" So I sighed and said yes and let him blather on some more about stupid stuff.
I got high behind today and sent him two pics of socks that were on my camera and said, "Yes, people really do knit socks. It is a great way to express artistic color choices."
We will see if he "gets it", but I am not holding my breath. Muggles!
I did not achieve my goal of a new skein of yarn this week. I am about 1/2 finished with the second bobbin. I tried hard for about three days, and I quit working so hard. I did finish one of the books I had downloaded from the library to listen to. It was really good. Nothing else keeps me on track with spinning like audiobooks. Podcasts just don't do it any more.
Have a good weekend.

Gosh! June Is Almost Done!
I also finished the pink skein of yarn. It is beautiful, even if I say so myself. I love it. It is 50/50 romney dyed with Gaywool Salmon and faux cashmere dyed with leftover cups of Gaywool dye on a dye day on the deck. CJE and I called it Clown Barf, since it was so many different colors of pink, red, green, blue, and yellow. I haven't taken any photos yet.
I am presently spinning some more turquoise merino for the handspun sweater. I have one skein left and decided I needed to have two skeins, just in case. I am halfway done on the sleeves. Then onwards to the body.
I am also chugging along on the afghan for my nephew and his lady love. I am sick of it, but I am trying to get it big enough before I give up on it. I finished number 1 sock on the traveling socks in my purse. I immediately cast on and started ribbing before I put it back into the purse.
I have also started stitching on a story quilt that I have been putting off for quite some time. When we cleaned out my grandmother's things, my sister-in-law showed me a ragged beginnings of a crazy quilt that she did not know any history or anything. She had found it in my grandmother's things. I recognized the fabrics from clothing my grandmother had made, but I know my grandmother hated quilting. She was very vocal about this. So that means it had to be my great-grandmother who started this. It would be the kind of thing my grandmother would hang onto because of the recognizable fabrics and that her mother started it.
I found this scrappy thing the other day, washed it, and the embroidery threads gave up the ghost. But I think that is part of the appeal to me. The ragged-ness is something I like. The weird part of it all is that the scraps are all wool pieces of fabric. So I started a story quilt yesterday, and today I did a little bit of stitching while it was cool out on the screen porch. A new journey!
This is a spinning wheel a friend's husband made her. Isn't it gorgeous? It is cherry and yellow wood. And yes-that is a clock mounted on the post! I sat down to do a little bit of spinning, and it is really nice. This guy is a genius. He makes all these things for his wife to keep her happy. Even a wooden needle holder for her embroidery needles! I am totally blown away! That thing in the background to the right is her embroidery stand! And on the end table is all her needlework stuff-bowls, containers, etc. that he made her.
Oh-oh! I forgot! The whole wall behind the sofa is this custom quilt rack that he made for all her quilts. Too much for me to fathom.
So CJE and AE are moving CJE's mom out to their place. They will now have both moms there to monitor and take care of. CJE has been moving everything of hers out of her studio so her mom can move into it. Now her two floor looms and other stuff are in the house in half of the family room. All her music stuff and stash and "stuff" is moving into a storage unit in town about 4 miles away.
I guess nothing else new. Oh-Patty tested negative for her six month follow-up heartworm test! Yeah! Noodles is moving really slow these days. We wouldn't want to overheat ourselves with all that fur.
I guess that's all. Just trying to stay cool and busy. My strength is gaining, although I am tired by the afternoon. I have been up early most mornings to utilize the cooler time to water and sit on the screen porch.
Talk at you in July. Happy 4th!
